*10 ways AI is shaping the next generation of library management systems*
AI in libraries is not simply about adding a chatbot to an existing LMS.
The more interesting question is how AI can help librarians discover, organise, manage and improve access to information.
Here are 10 areas where I see AI making a practical difference:
*1. AI-Powered Discovery* Search can go beyond title, author and keywords. AI can understand concepts, context and natural-language questions, helping users find resources even when they do not know exactly what to search for.
*2. Intelligent Cataloguing* AI can assist with metadata creation, subject headings, classification, abstracts and keywords. Librarians can then review and approve the results rather than starting everything from scratch.
*3. Automated Acquisition* By looking at usage patterns, curriculum requirements, citations and collection gaps, AI can help suggest books and e-resources that a library may need.
*4. Smarter Circulation* Borrowing data can reveal patterns that are easy to miss. Which resources are in high demand? When do usage peaks occur? Which collections are rarely used?
*5. AI Reference Assistant* An AI assistant connected to the library catalogue could handle routine questions and guide users towards relevant books, articles, databases and other resources.
*6. Personalised Recommendations* Libraries could recommend resources based on interests and previous activity. But this must be done carefully, with clear privacy safeguards and respect for user confidentiality.
*7. Collection Analysis* AI can help identify duplicate holdings, outdated material, collection gaps, emerging subjects and areas where future acquisitions may be useful.
*8. Predictive Analytics* Historical data can help libraries estimate future demand, anticipate high-use resources and support decisions around staffing, services and resource allocation.
*9. Digitisation & OCR* AI-assisted OCR, transcription and metadata creation can make the digitisation of historical collections faster. More importantly, it can make those collections searchable and easier to discover.
*10. AI-Ready Library Platforms* The next generation of library management systems may be much more than an LMS. They could connect collections, users, discovery, analytics and AI services within one intelligent environment.
*THE KEY QUESTION*
Libraries should not ask only:
“Does our LMS have AI?”
A better question is:
*“Where can AI improve library services while keeping librarians in control?”*
That distinction matters.
AI should *augment librarians, not replace them.*
The AI-ready library will bring together:
*Library software + AI + Data + Librarian expertise + Responsible governance*
Technology may change how libraries work, but professional judgement, context and human oversight will remain at the centre.
