How can libraries support researchers in the AI era?

AI is changing how research is done. But perhaps the more important question is this:
*How can researchers use AI without losing human judgement?*
A recent Elsevier report, based on responses from more than 3,000 researchers across 113 countries, points to an important role for academic libraries.
Libraries can support researchers in at least five ways:
*1. Help researchers understand AI*
AI can produce confident answers that are not necessarily accurate. Researchers need to verify sources, understand limitations and recognise possible bias.
This is familiar territory for librarians. Evaluating information has always been part of their work.
*2. Provide practical AI training*
Only 45% of researchers surveyed said they had adequate access to AI training.
Libraries can help researchers understand how to use AI tools appropriately, including when AI is useful and when human judgement should take priority.
*3. Recommend trusted AI tools*
The number of AI tools available to researchers is growing quickly.
Libraries can help separate useful research tools from those that may create more confusion than value, while also explaining their limitations and appropriate use.
*4. Contribute to AI policy*
Only 32% of researchers said they believed their institution had good AI governance.
Libraries can bring practical research experience into institutional discussions and help researchers understand emerging policies and guidelines.
*5. Support collaboration*
Interdisciplinary collaboration is increasing, with 68% of researchers reporting more collaboration across disciplines.
Libraries can help researchers discover relevant publications, experts, institutions and research areas outside their immediate field.
*My takeaway:*
AI may change the tools researchers use, but it does not remove the need for judgement.
If anything, the ability to question information, verify evidence and understand context becomes even more valuable.
The library of the future may therefore be less about simply helping researchers *find information* and more about helping them *understand, evaluate and use information wisely.*
