*From Information Retrieval to Agentic AI: The Evolving Role of Librarians*
*AI4LIB Weekly Digest | 5–11 October 2026*
This week, our AI4LIB updates explore how AI is changing information retrieval, research support, library operations and professional practice. Here are seven key highlights.
1. *RAG and the Librarian’s Traditional Expertise*
Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) combines information retrieval with AI-generated responses. Its success depends on reliable documents, good metadata, controlled vocabularies and effective discovery. Librarians have long worked with the principles behind this approach.
2. *Build Your Own RAG Chatbot with n8n*
Our AI4LIB Open Hour session by Mr Bhavesh Patel demonstrates how to build a document-based chatbot using n8n, Qdrant and OpenAI embeddings. Learn about document chunking, vector databases, AI agents and chatbot workflows.

3. *Rethinking Information Literacy in the Age of AI*
Information literacy now requires more than effective searching. Students and researchers must verify AI-generated citations, examine evidence, compare AI tools with library databases, understand the limitations of AI detectors and document their use of AI.
4. *27 AI Tools for Librarians*
Explore tools for literature reviews, academic reading, cataloguing, metadata, writing, patron services, content creation and data analysis. The collection also includes specialised GPTs for book cataloguing and Koha MARC record preparation.
The practical advice is simple. Start with one genuine library problem, test one tool and evaluate its results.
5. *RAG for Libraries: A Practical Implementation Guide*
Begin with a clearly defined collection, such as library FAQs, research guides, policies or an institutional repository. Options include n8n and Qdrant for visual workflows, or Chroma, sentence-transformers and Ollama for a self-hosted setup.
Always provide source citations, test questions the system cannot answer and establish a process for updating documents.
6. *From MEDLARS to Google and Modern AI*
The history of information technology offers important lessons for today’s AI transformation. MEDLARS, MARC, OCLC, ELIZA, DIALOG and the Digital Libraries Initiative illustrate the long relationship between libraries, information retrieval and computing.
The continuing challenge is to ensure equitable access, develop AI literacy and help users distinguish convincing answers from trustworthy evidence.
7. *Agentic AI and NotebookLM: New Possibilities for Library Work*
AI agents offer potential support for repetitive tasks such as metadata enrichment, catalogue record preparation, thesis processing and research screening. Begin with small pilots, read-only access, audit trails and human review.
NotebookLM offers another practical application. It helps researchers organise uploaded papers, identify themes and contradictions, and trace claims to source documents. Always verify the evidence and follow institutional data-handling rules.
*Our takeaway this week*
AI is expanding what libraries and information professionals are able to do. But better tools do not remove the need for reliable knowledge organisation, professional judgement, privacy safeguards and critical evaluation.
The priority is to adopt AI thoughtfully, test its performance and keep librarians involved in decisions that affect users and institutional knowledge.
